What is this obsession with religion?

In a country obsesses with religion, millions of religions, gazillions of Gods and Goddesses and Babas and Gurus (surds and otherwise) and Maulvis, we sure get to see a number of interesting sights. Ever had a chance to pass by a temple early in the morning? Even if a temple is situated in the middle of a densely packed road, people will slow their cars no matter what; bow to the temple from within their cars and then move along, honking for the next person to move faster; blissfully unaware of the fact of having created a jam in their wake. Of course, subsequently every driver will do the same thing and the people would be stuck in the jam; cursing the same gods for their misfortune. Talk about Irony.

In fact I remember an incident that I read somewhere, don’t know if it’s true or not. A family was irritated with people peeing on their walls due to a disadvantageous location of their home. Somebody suggested them to place God image tiles at about 3 feet height all across their boundary walls. And Voilla! Their problem solved.

  3. It is better to be spiritual than religious but unfortunately most of us either don't understand it or are just opposite of it. Many of us just bow in front of any/every temple/gurudwara out of fear b'cos we just want to beat the law of gravitation and just want to be only growing upwards, the more we grow the more fearful we become and just keep manifesting our fears in the examples sighted by you...... wow! what to do???? It takes all to make this beautiful world.....

  4. @Brother: Not only that, we also do tend to feel that by bowing to an existence higher than ours, we do transfer a part of ownership of our various work to that entity... and that we have something to fall back on!!!

  6. My home which is also close to a temple has regular visitors in the form of holy cows which love to munch some hedge from our garden. Also their dung welcomes me many times I set my feet out. Beggars crouching outside the parking gate each Tuesday are a headache too. The real pain is 'jagrata'. No body bothers about the supreme court regulations of not playing loud speakers after 11 o clock. I remember the sunday morning when I was so much pissed off by the raucous voice of a woman shrieking into the microphone that I had decided to shoot her head with a sniper. Only if I had one. Living besides a temple is terrible.

I can very well relate to all the troubles, of living next to a mandir, as you mentioned. But please do not shoot anyone :D

Anyhow, of lately things have not been so loud around my neighbourhood which incidentally has couple of mandirs, a gurudwara and a mosque within hearing range.... but come navratras and the festive season and things are expected to become loud

@Boise: Look forward to having you here in the future... If you liked these posts, do go through the one on 'Punjabi Weddings'. I am sure it would be a great initiation as well as entertainment to you...

@Minert: Most certainly I have come across these people. Lets face it, people are the same everywhere despite whatever religion they practice. Look forward to having you here in the future.

  10. @Attorney sir: Firstoff sir, it is not only about India; people try to conform to group religious sentiments everywhere; isn't the fact that parents have to drag children and adults alike to church a similar scenario? And yes, religion is always dependent on the perception on not one but a group of persons; I guess that is how religion is born in the first place!
